cyberpunk science fiction Looking for good "Cyberpunk" comic
|

I hate to say cyberpunk, but I am looking for a comic a la Bladerunner and/or the Shadowrun rpg. Sin City seems pretty cool, but I know there has got to be something else out there. Any suggestions? Thanks. . . Rich

Rich Well, it's more humorous than Bladerunner (how hard is that?), but it's still a great cyberpunk comic: Lazarus Churchyard. Dark Horse put out a graphic novel of the three issues that came out a few years ago. The main character, Lazarus Churchyard, is a plasborg. His body is made out of intelligent plastic, he's been alive for almost 400 years, he wants to die but can't. There's also a character named Angel whose forearms were altered by the government so that all of her cells are now tiny buzzsaws. but they didn't numb her nerves, so she's in search of a high that will kill the pain. I wish the author (Warren Ellis) would do another series. There are a couple stories about Angel in the Deadline comic series (not the magazine). Kim

James The Crow O'Barr did a one-shot story in _Dark Horse Presents_ called _frame_ 137 , that was very definitely Gibson-_style_ cyberpunk. I don't remember the issue number offhand

Thanks. . . Rich If you can find them, you may want to check out the six Paranoia comics - yes, _base_d on the game - that Malibu (I believe) put out a few years ago. Very dark, excellent art (at least in the first two or three issues), and a good story, considering that it's a licensed thing. However, they definately aren't gibson-_style_ cyberpunk - Blade Runner is the best comparison I can think of right now. I hear that the Torg series was pretty good too, but I personally haven't seen that one. Other ideas...well, there's always manga, and I think I've seen a thing or two in an anthology (Negative Burn, if I remember right). Evan Dorkin's Pirate Corps! is the only other science fiction comic that I can think of that doesn't try to be space opera, from what I've seen of it. Later, Heretic Werdna

ps. What I've seen of Sin City doesn't seem very c-punkish to me, but if it's something like what you're looking for, try The Invisibles, from Vertigo...I find Morrison's _style_ (especially with the right artist) to be reminiscent of Gibson's writing. And even if I'm just imagining things, it's an intensely good comic anyway and everybody should at least take a look at it.

Continuity comics had something called CyberRad that I thought was fairly cool. It's not in a futuristic setting, but the main character would fit the bill as 'cyber-punk'. The art is (like all Continuity comics) Neal Adams clone-work. On a side note, Continuity is probably best know for Samuree, Mistress of the Martial Arts. When I think about it, she's got to be one of the first 'bad-girls' of current fandom rave. I even think I saw an advertisement for her _title_ being renewed.
