cyber punk films What is Cyberpunk to you?

Is the holywood movie Ronin cyberpunk? It started out that way, with the non-governmental, privately employed covert ops team, but turned into the usual action flick. What I want to know is why a lot of people consider Ronin cyberpunkish, but always seem to forget one of Jean Reno's other works, The Professional, which struck me as a far more cyberpunkish movie than Ronin. I don't think either of them qualify as cyberpunk, for the same reason that Casablanca doesn't... no cyber. They've got the atmosphere, they've got the attitude, but they don't have the tech.

You don't need tech to be cyberpunk. Blade Runner , the quintessential cyberpunk flm, had no cybernetics at all. It had biotech...but then again so did Jurrasic Park . When judging what constitutes a CP film, attitude is *the* most important thing. _style_ over substance after all.

Oh, agree completely. Assassins more decent and likeable than police officers? That sort of value inversion is - IMHO - a cyberpunk element, even if nobody concerned has any cybernetic augmentations bigger than a pacemaker.

You don't need tech to be cyberpunk. Blade Runner , the quintessential cyberpunk flm, had no cybernetics at all. It had biotech...but then again so did Jurrasic Park . Cyberpunk is about Dystopian near future (as viewed from the fears and concerns of 1980's culture) ....which usually involves globalization, economic and ecological strife, man vs. machine, increasing diversity, questions about the meaning of humanity (as campared to machines), and so forth. Ronin is not Dystopian near future. The Professional was not Dystopian near future. Casablanca was not Dystopian near future. None of these works are cyberpunk. Perhaps they are all cynical, but that's not the definition of cyberpunk. By your definitions, all films involving a hero with a bad attitude facing adversity from the system would be cyberpunk, including Conan. Any definition of c-punk that includes Casablanca and Conan, really is a flawed definition. Steph ******** Knowledge is Power Power Corrupts Study Hard, Be Evil. Current Characters: -Constance Talmadge, Famed Silent Film Star with a heavy Flatbush accent -Therrin Terragin, Big Dumb Blacksmith with a Revolutionaly Dwarvin Wife -Leatham MacDonaugh, Medieval Herdsman

The ending was appropriate, though. Nobody ever did find out what was in the briefcase that the whole damn film was about I had occasion to meet the writer of Ronin (he is the brother of a guy I work with), and even he didn't know what was in the box. It doesn't matter is what he said. Wordman
